Sally Benzel was voted and honored to be the Miss Deaf Georgia of 1987-89 by GAD since she was the only one who participated in the Miss Deaf Georgia pageant. During her reign, she was the Vice President of GAD chapter in Cobb County.
Sally was the first celebral palsy person who proudly represented her state of Georgia to compete with 33 national contestants at the Miss Deaf America pageant in Charleston, South Carolina in 1988. She performed the song called "Look at the Mountain" at the Miss Deaf America pageant.
