Kathy entered the Miss Deaf America Pageant in Cincinnati, Ohio in the year of 1980 and competed with 31 contestants. She won the Best Talent Award when she performed the original poem that was written by her called "Liberty, Our Challenge" and she wore an "Uncle Sam" outfit. She was chosen as one of ten semi-finalists then one of five finalists. Finally she was selected as second runner up of Miss Deaf America.

From Kathy's comments when the question was asked how she felt when she won the title of Miss Deaf Georgia and what she had learned from her experience at the Miss Deaf America pageant:

"I was excited and awed by the experience. It was a great experience meeting well-known deaf people at NAD Convention where the MDAP was a part of it and learned a lot about National Association of the Deaf and what it does for deaf people nationwide. I also became friends with the MDAP contestants and still keep in touch with them. The pageant also boosted my abilities to sign in front of a large crowd. I recommend deaf young ladies in Georgia to try out for the pageant and to show what we are all about."
